A general coin collecting book to use is Coin Collecting 101 by Alan Herbert and there's also Ancient Coin Collecting: The Roman and Byzantine Culture by Wayne G. Sayles. Hope that helps.
References :
Go to www.piecesoftime.com it is a good site for ancients. Also www.krausebooks.com as well as www.brooklygallery.com. The latter 2 sell books on ancient coins. A great set of books is Ancient Coin collecting by Wayne G. Sayles there are several volumes each dealing with different aspects and types. A good book is the Handbook of Ancient Greek & Roman Coins by Zander H. Klawans edited by K.E. Bressett. It gives the basics on identification and a little history. hope this helps. I collect some Greek and Roman but my main interest is Ancient Asian coins. They are not expensive and fun to try and figure out.
References :
49 years a numismatist, Lots of books
