Why do people collect coins and stamp?

by admin on July 11, 2009

Something i cant seem to understand is why people collect coins and stamps without a Specific category, e.g world coins, When it’s almost like the skies the limit, they can never collect them all or know what is out there to collect. Don’t people collect things to complete the entire set? why do they bother to collect limitless objects?

Experienced coin collectors do collect sets in one way or another. Some go with date and mint mark, others maybe varieties, of say maybe one year or type of coin. Some go for a certain theme say ships. When first starting out few know what they may really find interesting so go for it all. In the end they will find something they like and go for it or stop collecting. Also a true numismatist studies what coins he collects. As time goes by he may go from one thing to another. The more one learns about coins the better the chance he will get into some that are more complicated to collect. The reason people these days get into all kinds of accumulations is they are trying to make a fast buck and few do. It is the quality coins I bought 40 years ago that have gone way up in value. I have them because I like them not because back then, I thought they would make me money. There are 3 rules to follow, do not get caught up in Fads, buy the highest grade you can afford in the series you pick to collect and most important read up on the series you collect, so you know more than the dealer about that series, but never let him know you do.
